Noah Stewart

Tenor with the popular touch

In this delightful, funny and warm interview this exciting young tenor talks about his debut album 'Noah'. Talking about his unusual route to operatic success from his roots in Harlem, New York, he is currently debuting at the Royal Opera House in Judith Weir's Miss Fortune. He started out doing backing vocals for Mariah Carey and voice - overs on Sesame Street. Certainly his route to success has been an unusual one. And perhaps it's no surprise that his album has the popular touch.

The 'crossover' genre so often disliked by opera aficionados sits rather more comfortably on Noah Stewart's shoulders as his music and cultural heritage makes his renditions of spirituals and pop songs seem rather more legitimate than it might be with other artists.

The light touch of his album should not deter though. He is a serious talent who has done a great deal of new music with composers such as John Adams, Philip Glass and must recently Judith Weir and is also utterly believable in the classic heroic tenor roles. As the Guardian recently said:

"The rich clarity of his tone and dashing persona seem capable of conquering anyone through sheer charisma alone"

His ambition is to become the Mario Lanza of his day. Perhaps he'll do it. He certainly has the freshness, the talent and the charisma to carry it off.
